07:30pm: Folk Alarm
feat. Kevin Breit
Successfully bridging the
disparate genres of folk and jazz, Folkalarm has
performed at the Toronto,
PEI and Rochester Jazz festivals as well as many
folk festivals across the
country and numerous concerts and clubs in and
around Ontario. Formed 10
years ago, the band Jorn Anderson, Kevin
Breit,
and Russ
Boswell has recorded five CDs on Poverty Playlist and enjoys a
very solid following. Their
music is improvisational, fun, often spontaneous
and always grooves hard.
Audiences have always found themselves engaged
and engrossed in Folkalarm's
melodic instrumental interplay.

13: Special Valentine's Weekend Event
08:00pm: Chet Baker's
"My Funny Valentine" with the Brownman
Quartet
Chet Baker has long been
revered for his romantic and soulful trumpet playing. Several seminal
records
on the Pacific Jazz label
in the early 50's all feature his genuine, always emotional playing.
Of those recordings
"My Funny Valentine" stands
out as one of the most encapsulating of his lyrical approach to ballads.
On
Sat Feb 13th, Canada's own
iconic jazz trumpet player Brownman - back in Toronto after months of international
touring with Guru's Jazzmatazz
- will play the bulk of the tunes appearing on the "My Funny Valentine"
recording,
as well as other romantic
selections popularized by the legendary Chet Baker. Brownman - though
best known for
energized, virtuosic trumpet
playing - will tonight be digging deep into his soulful, lyrical side for
an evening of
musical romance. You'll
want to book your candle lit table for 2 soon.

14: Valantine's Day & CD Release Party!
08:00pm: Sophie
Berkal-Sarbit CD Release
The 16 year old jazz singing
comes to Trane for a Valentine's day CD Release
AllAboutJazz.com
writes:
"In spite of the fact she's
only graced this planet for 16 years, Winnipeg's Sophie Berkal-Sarbit
has much of what it takes
to make it as a jazz singer. Just give a listen to her debut album
“The Gypsy On my Soul” and
you'll see what I'm talking about. Judging from her rock-steady
performances, you'd think
she's channelling some of the classic jazz singers from the golden
era of jazz, like Peggy
Lee and Billie Holiday. She can twirl her vocal chords around the lyrics
of her 11 selections quite
nicely and even does a tad of scatting, easily out-singing many ladies
twice her age who call themselves
jazz singers."
